February 28, 2007 - In a successful attempt to stop the deportation of a Falun Gong practitioner to China, this morning some 100 detainees at Sydney's Villawood detention centre formed a human barricade...
The Refugee Action Coalition of NSW said the detainees assembled in and around a recreation room at the centre to protect the man who is inside the room. He was due to be deported on an Air China Flight departing at 12.20pm (AEDT) today.

Ian Rintoul from RAC told Perth Indymedia that detainees fear there may be further clashes with the 40 to 50 guards and detention centre officers.

"There is 100 detainees, people are coming and going but at any one time there is about 100 and they've got him inside," Mr Rintoul said. "The number of guards has increased, they have used force in the past and that is what is worrying the detainees, that there will be a clash if they try to remove this guy.

"Tensions are very high at Villawood at the moment." He told Perth Indymedia Immigration officials may try to grab him tonight - and a 24 vigl will br kept around the Chinese man who fears persecution and even death if deported to China.

Mr Rintoul said people of all different nationalities are forming the blockade, with one man telling him they were prepared to take "any action to protect this man. He said to me 'this isn't just a Chinese issue, this is a detainment issue, so we're all here'," Mr Rintoul said.

The detainee, Falun Gong practitioner Xiang Tao An, fears he will be forced to become part of a live organ trade. Mr An, 35, believes that his religion means he will be incarcerated on arrival in China. He says he has been detained twice by Chinese authorities in the past and claims he was beaten.

An refugee activist in contact with the detainees, Jamal Daoud, said the stand-off eased after Department of Immigration officials told the protesters Mr An's deportation notice had been cancelled.

"One of the detainees told me that the detention authorities even invited the Chinese detainees to BBQ and drinks," he said. "The detainees are very cautious that the department could try to deport the asylum seeker during the night. But for now, the department is very clearly does not want any standoff with detainees, especially if there is some media involvment."

The detainees protesting on behalf of Mr An are mostly Chinese, but other nationalities are involved due to concern over a recent series of deportations, said Ian Rintoul.

The Department of Immigration said earlier this week that Mr An, 35, was an unlawful non-citizen and would not be in danger if he was sent back. He was detained by Chinese authorities twice for practising Falun Gong before travelling to Australia in 2000.

He was taken into Villawood in 2003 while his claim for asylum was assessed, and was interviewed by a Chinese government delegation that was allowed to visit detainees in May 2005. Mr An's lawyer, Michaela Byers, said: "He fears that they will detain him on arrival, and that he may match someone on a data base who needs an organ transplant."

A report published last year, based on investigations undertaken by a former Canadian cabinet minister, accused Chinese authorities of killing Falun Gong practitioners and selling body parts to foreigners. China, which has banned the Falun Gong spiritual group since 1999, denies the claim.

As of February 2, 2007 there are 224 detainees in Villawood Immigration Detention Centre - making a total of 556 in Australia's IDCs.

Falun Gong has been the focus of international controversy since 1999, when the government of the People's Republic of China began a suppression of the movement. China claims to have banned the group for what it considers to be illegal activities. The Falun Gong claims that the ban was the result of personal jealousy of the group’s popularity on the part of Jiang Zemin, a former President of the People's Republic of China.

The suppression of Falun Gong practitioners has been regarded by most western governments as a major international human rights issue. As of December 2005, sixty-one lawsuits have been filed in about thirty countries charging Jiang and several other senior officials with genocide, torture, and crimes against humanity for their roles in the treatment of Falun Gong in mainland China.

Pine Gap: Pine Gap is a military spy base for the United States located 20 km outside Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. Pine Gap gathers military intelligence and uses a satellite tracking system to pinpoint targets in U.S. bombing raids on Iraq and Afghanistan. It is also the command centre for the 'Missile Defence System', an integral part of the US 'Star Wars' system enabling the US to dominate and control space.

At dawn on December 9, 2005 a ‘Citizen’s Inspection’ took place causing Pine Gap to shut down for five hours. Six hundred employees were denied access into the base and the employee’s cars queued up for several kilometres outside.

Two members of Christians Against ALL Terrorism, Jim Dowling from Daybora and Adele Goldie from Brisbane had entered the Pine Gap military base undetected and photographed themselves on the roof of a building before being arrested. Two other members of the group Donna Mulhearn from Sydney and Bryan Law from Cairns went undetected for an hour before being arrested cutting through the last inner fence.

The four had walked for several hours through desert terrain. Jessica Morrison from Melbourne and Sean O’Reilly from Brisbane held a peaceful vigil outside the front gates around six that morning. During the vigil Sean O’Reilly was arrested for hindering police. Sean was found not guilty in the Alice Springs Magistrates court.

Jim Dowling, Adele Goldie, Bryan Law and Donna Mulhearn have been charged under the Defence (Special Undertakings) Act 1952. The Act has not been used previously and carries a maximum jail sentence of 7 years, with an additional two years for taking photographs within the base. The four will be appearing in the Alice Springs Supreme Court; a trial date is soon to be set.

Donna Mulhearn: From Sydney, Donna was a human shield during the war in Iraq in 2003. She later returned to Iraq under occupation as a humanitarian aid worker to set up a shelter for street kids in Baghdad and support refugee families. She is a former journalist and political adviser who is now an independent writer and speaker on non-violence, spirituality and politics. Her latest Middle East trip included her third visit to Iraq as well as four months in the West Bank of Palestine

Donna joined the action to inspect Pine Gap with first-hand experience of the damage the facility has done to innocent people. “While staff at Pine Gap pin-pointed missiles in Iraq, I experienced the impact of them,” she said. “They call it a military strike; I saw it as murder of civilians”.

Apologies to those who like to listen to the uploaded broadcasts. Currently we lack the physical time and people to edit and upload each week.

We automatically capture the show each week on our server. Its a 48MB mp3 file. With a broadband connection it takes around 20 minutes to fetch. It takes around 2-3 hours after the show to:

- download 50MB from the web,
- edit out the copyright stuff,
- cut into consumable slices,
- convert to smaller files,
- and then upload to http://radio.indymedia.org

Brisbane-born O'Reilly is one of the Pit Stop Ploughshares defendants awaiting trial in Dublin on 5 July on charges of causing $US2.5 million criminal damage to a US war plane that was to be deployed in the 2003 Iraq conflict. Defendants have been allowed to leave the country, but are required to return to Ireland a week before the July trial. O'Reilly is in Australia to visit family.

Background:
On 3rd February 2003, as part of ongoing resistance at Shannon Airport, the Pitstop Ploughshares disarmed a US warplane. Within the month, three of the four companies contracted to ferry US troops and weapons had left Ireland.

International peace activist Ciaron O'Reilly will be giving a free lunchtime lecture at UWA on Friday 28th April talking about his commitment to active non-violence in waging peace.

The Pitstop Ploughshares 5 will return to trial again at Dublin's Four Courts on Monday July 5th 2006. The trial is likely to run for two weeks.

Ciaron O'Reilly is currently awaiting trial in Ireland for disarming an American war plane on its way to the Iraq war in 2003. He has previously served jail terms in the USA and Australia for similar 'ploughshares' actions and remains committed waging a non-violent fight for peace. He is part of the Catholic Worker movement, which he describes as "a radical Catholic anarchist pacifist movement".

Ciaron is a controversial figure who has received acclaim from prominent people around the world including Desmund Tutu, while also stirring the ire of some within peace movements abroad and in Australia.

Deja vu? Peace activist detained by ASIO - CRIKEY

Date: 8 February 2006: Christian peace activist Ciaron O'Reilly was detained and questioned by ASIO agents at Brisbane airport last Friday after a 30-hour flight from Ireland. The interview took place in a secure room at Brisbane airport and one of the questions agents asked the jet-lagged O'Reilly was whether he'd had previous dealings with ASIO. "Well you're a secret organisation," he replied, "you tell me if I've had dealings with ASIO agents before."

Brisbane-born O'Reilly is one of the Pit Stop Ploughshares defendants awaiting trial in Dublin on 5 July on charges of causing $US2.5 million criminal damage to a US war plane that was to be deployed in the 2003 Iraq conflict. Defendants have been allowed to leave the country, but are required to return to Ireland a week before the July trial. O'Reilly is in Australia to visit family.

ASIO questioned O'Reilly about his plans during his three-month stay in Australia, and about his role in peaceful protests during the Shoalwater Bay "Operation Talisman Sabre" joint US/Australia military exercises in 2005. He was also asked whether he planned to accompany his brother Sean to his late February Alice Springs court date arising from his arrest following a peace demonstration at the Pine Gap joint defence and intelligence-gathering facility.

During the interview, O'Reilly was asked about the Pit Stop Ploughshares case in Ireland. If convicted, the five Catholic Worker activists face up to ten years in jail. The ASIO interview ended in a Keystone Cops moment when the agents had to call for outside assistance to open the interview room, having locked O'Reilly and themselves in.

O'Reilly's detention at Brisbane airport has highlighted the international cooperation of security agencies in tracking anti-war activists. Several of O'Reilly's American friends were raided by the FBI just before they left for Ireland to attend the June trial. They were charged with offences that arose from a 2003 action in which they occupied a US Marines recruiting office and poured blood on documents. They are now serving jail terms.

O'Reilly was also under surveillance when he was last in Australia in June 2005 and told Crikey he is assuming that his phone calls are being monitored this time.

Meanwhile, Newsweek recently revealed that field reports from the Pentagon's counter-intelligence unit show that Texas-based peace activist Scott Parkin had been under surveillance from at least June 2004.

Chernobyl - a timely reminder: The 20th Anniversary of the nuclear power plant disaster at Chernobyl is an opportunity to oppose the nuclear industry. The link between the nuclear power industry and nuclear weapon proliferation is irrevocable.

The expansion of the Australian uranium market only compound this danger. The uranium industry erroneously flout climate change as an excuse to revitalise their multi-billion dollar corporate campaign for nuclear energy. Reports estimate a total death toll of 93,000 but cite that in Belarus, Russia and the Ukraine alone the accident could have resulted in "an estimated 200,000 additional deaths in the period between 1990 and 2004."

CHERNOBYL BACKGROUND: On April 26th 1986, technicians at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power station in the Ukraine carried out a controlled experiment in the fourth reactor. They deactivated several major safety systems that would have shut down the reactor in case of accident. But the experiment went wrong. Explosions blew the top of the reactor off and started a fire in the core that burned for many days blowing a cloud of deadly radioactivity into the surrounding environment.

The Chernobyl nuclear accident was the biggest nuclear accident ever. The wind carried the radiation cloud over Belarus where 70% of the radiation fell, where more than 2 million people once lived, the ground now heavily contaminated for many thousands of years.

Students at Edith Cowan Uni's Mt Lawley campus defend their actions during a rally in which the Federal Education Minister Brendan Nelson was forced to run for cover. According to corporate news reports, one student was arrested and two police officers being injured. Students from around the country had gathered at ECU for an NUS conference to protest Dr Nelson's VSU - Voluntary Student Unionism. As Dr Nelson left the building, a group of about 50 students closed in on him, forcing him to retreat inside.

As Nelson tried to leave, flanked by security officers and police on horseback, a crowd of protesters who were gathered outside refused to let him through. Tussles broke out and Dr Nelson retreated back inside the building.

University student guild spokesman Brother Steve says he was surprised at the level of force used against the students. "The people actually held off their protest to allow the children to do their performance and for the Aboriginal peoples inside to have their cultural moment," he said.

"Yet it seems the police and the minister were quite happy to go at the students with horses and as it would be, arrest one of our people." Protester Ricky Hendon says the students had organised a peaceful protest. "We were here in respect also of people who were in this Indigenous centre trying to open their centre," he said.

"We decided amongst ourselves that we would not disrupt the opening of the centre, that we would remain quiet and we did that out of respect and this is the way this has turned out, which is so very unfortunate."

Palmer forest was meant to be protected under the Gallop Government’s previous election promises because of its high conservation value (HCV). This promise has been broken. Logging could begin in Palmer Block immediately.

Days after the 2005 WA election the Forest Products Commission (FPC) began marking in 290 hectares of this HCV forest in preparation for logging. The FPC expects to get 12,100 m3 of 1st and 2nd grade saw logs, representing the highest volume per hectare of jarrah on this years logging plan at 42 m3/ha. These high volumes are because of the many large old growth jarrah trees that can be found in the Palmer forest block.

Most of the wood will go to sawmills owned by GUNNS - who are responsible for wood chipping Tasmania’s ancient forests. [See Also: McGunns]

Action is required now if we are to save this precious forest ecosystem.

PALMER BLOCK 1 - Jarrah FOREST RESCUE – OFFICE HOURS Assessments

Assessments done by independent Environmental Consultants on “out-of-date” data, and not actually going to the site itself to record the level of HCV – which the Collie Conservation Group have. Some 500 people had signed the initial community-based petion to protect the Palmer Forest Block from logging. With dwindling Jarrah resources, pressure from big industry like Gunns [BLAHBLAHBLAH] the government have ignored the community’s wishes and will push ahead with Logging the area immediately. Activists camped at the site say: Roads have now been marked out and little regard has been given to the threat to the bio-diversity of the area nor the impact of logging will have on the habitat.

Well its been cold and wet in Palmer over the last two weeks, but we have furthewr improved camp conditions and put a tin roof up in place of the tarps, it much cosier now and we're ready for further weather.

The rain we have had has pushed palmer into the too wet to log catergorey. This is part of Calm's regulations to control soil disturbance in wet soil conditions, however the forest products commission can apply to CALM for special permission to log any way. Weve been told by the CALM district manager that there has been no such request and he would likley refuse any such request.

In true CALM logic however they are still allowed to go in and clear vegetation, dig up soil and drive around the bush to construct roads!!

So on one hand we hope that we now have more time to work on building support for further action, but on the other we need to be ready to stop road construction we could be immenant.

More support is needed in camp to prepare to stop any move to construct roads, while we also need more support in perth to raise more awareness.

Palmer forest was meant to be protected under the Gallop Government's previous election promises because of its high conservation value (HCV). This promise has been broken. Logging could begin in Palmer at any time.

Days after the recent WA State election the Forest Products Commission (FPC) began marking out 290 hectares of this HCV forest in preparation for logging. The FPC expects to get 12,100 m3 of 1st and 2nd grade saw logs, representing the highest volume per hectare of jarrah on this years logging plan at 42 m3/ha. These high volumes are because of the many large old growth jarrah trees that can be found in the Palmer forest block.

Most of the wood will go to sawmills owned by GUNNS; who are responsible for wood chipping Tasmania's ancient forests.

Indeed the 20th century was the most violently homophobic period of history: deportation to concentration camps under the Nazi regime, Soviet gulags, blackmail and persecution in the United States in the McCarthy era...

Homosexuality is discriminated against everywhere: in at least 80 countries, homosexual acts are forbidden by law; in many countries, the punishment can exceed ten years in prison; sometimes, the law prescribes life imprisonment. And in a dozen countries, capital punishment may be actually carried out. In Africa, recently, several presidents have brutally acted on their will to combat personally this "scourge" which they consider "anti-African".

Even in other countries where homosexuality is not considered a crime, persecutions have multiplied. In Brazil, for example, death squads and skin heads spread terror: 1,960 homophobic murders have been officially reported between 1980 and 2000. In these conditions, it is difficult to think that "tolerance" is gaining ground. So, homophobia appears more violent today than ever before.

The International Day Against Homophobia "will articulate action and reflection in order to struggle against all physical, moral, or symbolic violence related to sexual orientation or to gender identity. It intends to inspire, support, and coordinate all initiatives contributing to the equality among citizens in right, as well as in fact, and to achieve this in all countries where action is possible."

Goodooga, in April: The meeting held in Moree on the 22nd of April was a success. The founding of the modern-day Gumilaroi Nation was a significant step towards asserting the right of self-determination by the Gumilaroi people. We are no longer seeking charity nor will we accept feel-good programs for the sake and political convenience of the government and their bureaucrats.

Over the coming months we will complete the definitions of our nations’ boundaries and we will be asking all persons who have a family connection to the Gumilaroi Nation to make themselves known in order for us to determine our population and the distribution of our families within Australia. All families are being asked to identify themselves so that they can be incorporated into our nations’ planning.

The identification of the Gumilaroi families is one of the most important outcomes from the Moree meeting. The delegates agreed that our identity as a Nation and Peoples is vital for our future. Over the coming three months we will consolidate what we are building. This is our initiative and we will always own it.

We will rebuild our pride as a people and show how great this Nation can and will be. The Gumilaroi have a long and proud history of fighting for our rights. The early settlers found that out and the modern historians fail to tell the truth of this Nation’s resistance to the invaders. The land of the Gumilaroi was not peacefully settled. It will be this fact that will dictate our future discussions with the governments, both state and federal. The interim leaders of the Gumilaroi Nation declared that it is time to reach a peaceful settlement where the Gumilaroi people can live on their lands without prejudice. The next three months will witness the development of a peace package that will see a proposal from the Gumilaroi Nation for presentation to the state and federal governments

This is an exciting time in our history. What we seek to achieve as a Nation and People is long over due. LAST CHANCE FOR DOMESTIC JURISDICTION TO ACT.

Indigenous Elders from geographic Australia are lodging a writ of mandamus at High Court Registry in Melbourne at 10.00am tomorrow morning on the Wednesday 13 April 2005, directing the defendants to investigate and prosecute key perpetrators (including top government officials) of acts of Genocide committed against Original Peoples of geographic Australia on 26 September 2002 and daily thereafter.

They are also making a declaration that the defendants are unwilling and unable (within the meaning of the International Criminal Courts Acts 2002) to investigate and prosecute such perpetrators for such acts of Genocide.

The I.C.C now has jurisdiction recognized by domestic law to investigate and prosecute such perpetrators for such acts of Genocide.

YES! After broadcasting weekly shows since June 2004, our timeslot is changing. RTRFM is undergoing some major program changes following a recent Program Review. As a result our show is shifting fro Tues Midnight to WEDNESDAYS at 7PM...

400 people made the trek to Pt Augusta in South Australia, including around 80 fiesty, passionate people from WA. Much police Violence ensued. 17 arrests were made. 5 Perth crew were arrested in a "grappling hook" incident which resulted in the tearing off a piece of fence!

On Tuesday 29th March, we talked with a dozen Perth folks who made the journey.

We combined the "last ever?" News From Nowhere [Anarchist Politcal Satire] show and did 2 hours of solid baxter reportage and discussion.

Currently the Tactical Response Group use them in emergency situations. There are concerns that the so called "non-lethal" Tasers can kill. 1. Beckley Bush Direct Action: DESPERATE MEASURES TO SAVE UNIQUE BUSHLAND

15-20 protestors have assembled onsite at the Beckley Bushland.

The home of 27 species of Orchid, the 4 hectare area, rich in biodiversity faces imminent destruction for a carpark. Activists have climbed trees, others are distributing flyers to motorists.

“Beckley Bushland is recognised for its biodiversity and habitat values, it has protected animals and plants and 26 species of orchids, so why is NMR allowed to clear 80% of it? There are trees that are over 300 years old, this bush is very special and must be protected,” said Greg Shanhun from up a tree.

“Both CALM and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) admit that current measures may not be enough to ensure the survival of the endangered orchids, so how can the government claim they are being adequately protected?” asked another of the protestors.

"The camp has been a great success so far. We have had wonderful support from the local community, and indications so far have been that the government might be prepared to acomodate our concerns."

“After a year long battle to save Beckley Bushland, frustrated environmentalists literally took to the trees ON THURSDAY LAST WEEK, while others handed out leaflets to commuters.

BANNERS: Clearly visible from South Street, protestors and banners hung from some of the trees that North Metro Rail want to clear for carparks for the new Murdoch train station.”

2. Parliamentary Review of ASIO Laws - Have Your Say
As you may know, there are anti-terrorism laws that allow ASIO to detain and question people that they suspect may have information related to terrorism. Under these laws, people do not have the right to silence and they are subject to secrecy provisions which means that they are not allowed to talk about the fact that there has been a warrant against them....

The good news is that the Parliamentary Joint Committee on ASIO, ASIS and DSD is reviewing these laws by looking at the effect and operation of these laws. The Committee wants to hear the views of the public by 24 March 2005 , so this is an important opportunity to let them know your views about these laws. At the end of the review they will make recommendations to Parliament about how to change or improve these laws.

A road convoy of Aboriginal elders and organisation representatives will leave Kalgoorlie-Boulder for Canberra tomorrow (1 March) to deliver a message of deep dissatisfaction with the Federal Government’s stripping away of regional representation for the Wongatha-Ngadju people and their alienation from policy formulation... 4. Who Profits? Who Pays? Corporate Australia in Iraq
Australian corporations have been well rewarded for their governments’ participation in the invasion and occupation of Iraq. A host of companies have received contracts related to oil infrastructures, communications technology, transport, food distribution and much, much more. Whilst relatively small compared to the major projects given to US and UK businesses, Australia’s corporate participation is by no means insignificant and Australia’s role in general has helped give legitimacy to the “coalition of the willing” and its brutal occupation.
